Stepping into Porters felt like being welcomed into a warm, friendly home. Right from the start, the atmosphere was inviting, and the staff made sure to set the stage for a fantastic dining experience. It could very well be the best steakhouse in Southampton.

As I settled in, I struck up a conversation with the waiter about the wine list. I mentioned my love for dessert wines and how I’d done some wine tasting before, but never really kept notes. The waiter was more than happy to share some insights and even offered to help with pairing suggestions. It was these little touches that made the evening feel special and personal.

From the impressive drinks list, I chose one of their house cocktails: the Charred Apple Sour.

For my starter, I went with the beef short rib, which had been sous-vide for 60 hours! The waiter initially admitted he thought it was 24 hour slow cooked, before being told it was 60 hours! I joked with him that 24 hours seemed impressive enough, so couldn't wait to see what 60 looked like!

It's well worth the nearly 3 day cooking time as the result was an unbelievably tender, flavour packed short rib dish. It was served with pickled fennel and a rich, savory jus (described as a BBQ sauce in the menu, but don't be expecting the kind you might have at home!) that elevated each bite.

When it came to the main event, the waiter showed me the two menus claiming one is your standard steakhouse menu, whereas the dry aged menu is what you order if you want an 'experience'... Of course I picked the experience!

I chose the 45-day dry-aged tomahawk steak, a hefty 700g cut cooked to a perfect medium rare. The waiter even asked if I'd like a sauce, before pretty much immediately retracting the offer saying I wouldn't need one as the steak speaks for itself (and I'm glad I listened!). I even joked with the waiter about wanting to gnaw on the bone, which he actively encouraged! (A man of my heart!)

The tomahawk came in at £77, which for the size and quality felt reasonable, not an everyday meal but fair for a treat.

It came with a light, dressed salad, the perfect accompaniment to the heavy steak. I ordered a side of the glazed carrots cooked in beef fat, seasoned with ras el hanout and finished with a crispy crumb. As carrots go they were very nice, however I'd personally pick a different side next time.

For dessert, I chose the raspberry and dark chocolate tart. It was beautifully presented with a homemade raspberry jam (I'm a sucker for raspberry jam at the best of times, let alone a homemade one!) and a delicate raspberry sauce swirl. It was the perfect sweet ending to an incredible meal.

I have to admit, I don't go to many steakhouses. Not because I don't like them but I (rather wrongfully) had the opinion that I know how to cook a steak at home! The bar has well and truly been set for me now, I'm not sure if another steakhouse can beat it (but you know I'll try anyway!)

Porters Steakhouse truly impressed me with not just the food, but the entire experience. The combination of quality, attentive service, and that warm atmosphere made it well worth the visit, I left feeling satisfied and eager to return, if only for the friendly atmosphere! If you’re looking for a steakhouse in Southampton that feels both special and welcoming, Porters should be top of your list.
